The first permanent public open space to be created as a result of the Prospect Heights Open Streets program, Underhill Plaza is open to the public at all hours. During daytime and early evening hours, tables and chairs are provided for public use. Community programming is offered during the week and on weekends; consult the events schedule for details.

Vanderbilt Open Streets is preparing for the launch of its fourth year of community programming, which will kickoff on Friday, April 21st. Vanderbilt Open Streets operates Friday from 5-10 pm and Saturday and Sunday from noon-10 pm. Special programming will be throughout the weekend in honor of Earth Day and in celebration of the new season of Open Streets.

In Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, popular neighborhood Open Streets have made their first step in a transition to permanent public spaces and calmer traffic. Today, a group of community organizers, neighbors, elected representatives and officials with the New York City Department of Transportation met to celebrate the opening of Underhill Plaza, a one-block stretch of Underhill Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street that has been closed to traffic in favor of creating new public space. After volunteers painted the roadbed a bright teal blue, planters and granite blocks were placed at each end of the new plaza, and moveable furniture was set up.
