Implementation of the Underhill Bike Boulevard

July 31, 2023

Prospect Heights UFO lands in new floating parking lane, creating NYC’s first spaceship protected bike lane!

For nearly two and a half years NYC DOT has been studying Underhill Avenue, talking with community members and collecting data on how to make the street safer. Their plan is finally being implemented, as crews began working on Underhill Ave over the weekend.

Key info:

New curb extensions increase pedestrian safety by improving visibility, reducing the crossing distance and slowing traffic.

Two blocks of Underhill Ave are now one way (southbound only):
– Bergen Street to St Marks Avenue (PS 9 block)
– Prospect Place to Park Place (playground block).

On those two blocks only, there is a northbound bike lane protected by a floating parking lane. (Southbound cyclists continue to share the travel lane with cars.)

For all other blocks between Pacific Street and Eastern Parkway, drivers and cyclists share the north and southbound travel lanes.

Other signs to look out for:
– new No Standing signs on a few blocks
– new all-way stop at Underhill Avenue and Lincoln Place.

We couldn’t be more excited to see these improvements! They will make the street safer for ALL users — whether they’re on wheels or on foot.
